Description
The Kingdom of Scotland (Scottish Gaelic: Rìoghachd na h-Alba) was an independent entity for much of its long history, originating from the early medieval dominion of the Picts. However, dynastic mechanisms united the English, Irish and Scottish crowns under the Scottish King James VI in 1603. More than a century later in 1707, the United Kingdom was declared and Scotland has remained a part of it ever since.
The Scottish royal standard, also known as the Lion Rampant of Scotland, displays a red lion with blue tongue and claws within a red double border with a motif of alternating heraldic lilies on a yellow field. The design’s earliest recorded use as a royal Scottish emblem dates back to 1222, during the reign of Alexander II. The double border with the lilies was added during the reign of Alexander III (1249 – 1286).
