Description

The County of Flanders (Dutch: Graafschap Vlaanderen, French: Comté de Flandre) was one of the territories constituting the Low Countries. The county existed from 862 to 1795 and was originally one of the secular fiefs of the Kingdom of France. The Flemish counts gained territory east of the Scheldt during the eleventh century, pinching the county in between France and the Holy Roman Empire. Flanders became part of Burgundy in 1386, fully joined the Holy Roman Empire as part of the Habsburg Netherlands in 1526 and existed within the Empire until its annexation by Revolutionary France in 1795. For centuries, the county and its major cities (cf. Bruges, Ghent, Ypres) were among the most prosperous entities in Europe.

The Flemish coat of arms, currently used by the Flemish Region within the Kingdom of Belgium, displays a black lion with red claws and tongue on a yellow field. The design was first used by Count Philip of Alsace in 1163 and is therefore among the oldest arms in Europe.

I love the flemish lion :) I would've love to see french Low Countries use again our historicals coats of arms and our historical name.

By the way I always wonder, did most of belgians flemish know there is a french Flanders too ? Because sometimes I see some french-speaking belgians saying us that we shouldn't use this flag or the name of Flanders, because flemish would see that as an "usurpation"
