Kingdom of Sicily ~ CoA Grunge Flag (1282 - 1713)

The Kingdom of Sicily (Sicilian: Regnu di Sicilia, Italian: Regno di Sicilia, Latin: Regnum Siciliae, Neapolitan: Regno ‘e Sicilia, Old Catalan: Regne de Cecília, Spanish: Reino de Sicilia) was founded by Roger II in 1130. The kingdom consisted of the island of Sicily, the Mezzogiorno region of mainland Italy and the Maltese Archipelago. In 1282, a revolt against the ruling Angevins brought the island of Sicily as a separate kingdom into the Crown of Aragon. The Angevins managed to maintain control in mainland Italy, founding a separate entity often referred to as the Kingdom of Naples. Aragonese rule over Sicily ended in 1713 as a result of the War of the Spanish Succession and the Treaty of Utrecht.

The Sicilian flag and coat of arms under Aragonese rule combined the red-yellow banner of Aragon with the black eagle on a white field of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, which ruled Sicily from 1194 to 1266, before the Angevin conquest.
