The German Revolution of March 1848 (German: Deutsche Märzrevolution) broke out in light of the pan-European revolutions that year. Loosely aligned revolutionary movements stirred in the states of the German Confederation, expressing deep discontent with the autocratic governments in power and calling for both greater political freedom as well as a united, democratic German Nation. As elsewhere in Europe, the aristocracy ultimately crushed the revolution by 1849.
