Description

The Duchy of Brittany (Breton: Dugelezh Breizh, French: Duché de Bretagne) was a medieval state established around 939, after the end of the Viking invasions. It was merged with the Kingdom of France in 1532 but survived until 1792, when the new French Republic introduced the administrative system of départements.

The Breton coat of arms displays a white field with black ermine spots, a design first seen on a seal from the year 1318. The symbolism behind the ermine spots is unclear.
