Crown of Aragon ~ Grunge Flag (1162 - 1716)

The Crown of Aragon (Aragonese: Corona d’Aragón, Catalan: Corona d’Aragó, Spanish: Corona de Aragón) was a medieval composite monarchy founded in 1162. It played an important role in the Christian effort to reclaim the Iberian peninsula from the Muslims (Spanish: Reconquista) and came to rule a large portion of eastern Iberia and southwestern France, the Balearic Islands, Sardinia, Sicily, southern Italy and even portions of Greece. Following the marriage of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella of Castile in 1469, the Aragonese and Castilian Crowns cemented the foundations for the unified Kingdom of Spain. It was unofficially abolished within Spain by King Philip V in 1716, following the War of the Spanish Succession.

The Aragonese banner and coat of arms displayed four red bars on a gold field, the latter using vertical bars. The design is one of the oldest in Europe, dating back to a 1150 seal of Raymond Berengar IV of Barcelona and being shown in the fourteenth century ‘Book of Knowledge of all Kingdoms’.
