Charlemagne (Latin: Karolus Magnus, German: Karl der Große, Dutch: Karel de Grote, 2 April 742 – 28 January 814) was the most prominent member of the Frankish Carolingian dynasty which rose to prominence during the eighth century. He became the King of the Franks in 768, the King of the Langobards in 774 and Emperor of the Romans in 800. Under his leadership, the Frankish Empire united most of the continental Latin West, a feat unseen since the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476.
