Alexander III of Macedon, commonly known as Alexander the Great (Greek: Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ Μέγας, Aléxandros ho Mégas, 20/21 July 356 BC – 10/11 June 323 BC), was a king of Macedon, a state in northern Greece. By the age of 30, he had defeated the Achaemenid Persian Empire in the east, led his army on a phenomenal conquering march and created one of the largest empires in history, stretching from the Ionian Sea in the west to the Himalayas in the east.
